Eastern Washington (Page 2/4)
[September 25 & 26] We continued north on US 97, but made a little
side trip to sample some nostalgia in
Roslyn, Washington,
which is the town where
Northern Exposure was filmed. Kathy and I enjoyed
that show for the wonderfully eclectic cast of characters that peopled the
fictitious Cicely, Alaska.
We visited Roslyn once before when Paul Olson took us there during one of
our visits to Seattle. That was quite a few years ago, however, so we
decided to stop in again and see if it had changed much. We wandered past the famous mural, saw the KBHR
(K-bear) radio station, and stopped for lunch at the Brick. The town had
not changed much, but the surrounding area is being heavily developed. I
fear that it won't be long before Roslyn loses her charm.

After lunch we returned to US 97 and continued north towards
Leavenworth. I'll have to admit, when I
first heard that this town decided to remake itself in the
image of a Bavarian village my first thought was, "Boy, does that sound hokey!"
But, I tried hard to reserve my judgment, and, although I am somewhat embarrassed to
say this, I
thought that the town was very beautiful. It captured the flavor of
Bavaria quite well. (I am, of course, an expert on Bavaria, having been there in
1966.)

Although we had only planned to stay one night, we were having fun both in town
and in the scenic surroundings and ended up staying two nights. Drinking a cold
beer on the deck of a local bar after a hot day of sight-seeing is a great way
to end the day!
