South to Yosemite & San Francisco (Page 2/6)
[October
25] Today we continued our quest to see as much of the Yosemite high country
as possible. Jim drove and we headed up to Tioga Pass. There's more
granite here than you could ever hope to see and yet, for some reason, what lies
around the next corner is just as beautiful if not more than what you've just
seen.
There are countless (at least I didn't take the time to count them)
places to stop along the Tioga Road but one of the most spectacular is Olmsted
Point. Where ever you look there are waves of granite frozen in time since
the passing of the glaciers. Some how trees manage to live there, taking
root in small cracks in the rock.
This is another place where I took way too many photos but am not convinced that
I captured the feel. Even if I did capture some feeling for the place, the
photos shown in this blog are too small to carry that feeling to you. We
stayed quite a while just enjoying the view and the fresh air. Jim tried
to do a mind-meld with the granite and Kathy scoured the surrounding area with
her binoculars.

Tioga Road is not reserved exclusively for granite. After leaving Olmstead
Point the road descends a bit and runs along the shore of the beautifully blue
Tenaya Lake. We eventually reached the Tuolumne Meadow and stopped to
enjoy a short hike up to Soda Springs.

When we finally returned to Doe's Cottage the evening air had cooled quite a bit
and Jim decided to start a fire in the fireplace to provide some warmth but
mostly to turn on nature's TV set. Places like this really put me in good
spirits.
