Mansion Hill Avenue
 [July
4] We had a very nice time in Racine with a picnic in Jan's yard.
But, we came back to Madison early in order to think about where we want the
movers to put things. Thank heavens this place has a very large storage
unit in the basement.
The best part of the day was a visit from Eric -- our first company. He
brought a nice food basket and some Wisconsin beers. He also brought along
a beautiful bouquet of gladiolas, half of which were red and half white to
represent the colors of the University of Wisconsin (actually, cardinal and
white). Then he and Kathy went out and bought a pizza, which we enjoyed
while sitting on the floor in our empty living room. Thanks, Eric, for
your thoughtfulness. We'll try not to bug you too much now that we live
close to you. (That's what your Mom says anyway. We'll see
how it plays out.)
[July 5] The movers showed up at 8 AM and were gone by 2 PM.
While they unloaded we tried to direct them to the garage, the storage area in
the basement, or various rooms in the apartment. As we unpack we're
finding that we didn't always make the right decision. We plan to leave as
much packed as we can since we hope to find a house in 4-6 months. But,
we're not sure that we can find all of the things we would like to unpack.
For example, we still can't find the everyday silverware!
 As
I've told a few people already, Mansion Hill Avenue gives the wrong impression
of where we are located since it's not a mansion and it's not on a hill.
We're at the very bottom of a hill right next to a farm. The road ends
just past our house and becomes a corn field. So, if you ever come to
visit you can't accidentally drive past the place without knowing it.
The 4-plex that we're in is very nice and, though it's only a 2-bedroom place,
it's quite roomy, about 1400 square feet I think. Kathy and I feel that we
are very lucky to have gotten this place sight unseen over the phone from 2000
miles away. Kathy made a lot of calls before she finally found a
rental, house or apartment, that did not require a one-year lease.
 We
have a great front porch that's big enough to easily hold our picnic table,
grill, and other patio stuff like that. Kathy has declared that this is
her favorite room in the house! The living room, dining room, and kitchen
areas are quite open the way we like them and the master bedroom has a walk-in
closet that's about the size of our first apartment!
The neighborhood seems nice and quiet and there is a park right across the
street where many of the neighbors like to walk their dogs. There are
definitely a lot of dogs in the neighborhood. The people in apartment 1
have a very friendly dog named Baxter. Don't ask me what kind he is, I
know nothing about dogs.
Now it's time to get settled in, relax a bit, and then get back to unpacking and looking for a
house.
