There is no joy in Mudville
Just when you think you're ready for the fast ball, life has a way of throwing you a curve.
My sister called last week to inform me that our nephew, Mike Zierten, had passed away.
All of the joy and excitement that Kathy and I were feeling in anticipation of
our son's September 15 wedding was washed away in a pool of tears and grief.
Mike was only 40 years old. He always seemed to wear a smile and had an
easy going, fun-to-be-around personality. He leaves behind a wife and
three children and leaves us all with an ache in our hearts and memories of good
times spent with him. Mike enjoyed sports and liked being involved with
coaching his sons' baseball teams. There is truly no joy in Mudville today
as his family and friends mourn Mike's passing.
At times like this you really think about family and friends and wish that you
had taken more time to be with them. We can't go back but we can try to
take advantage of the time that remains. Kathy and I went to Atlanta for
the funeral, as did my four siblings, their spouses, and some of Mike's cousins.
After the funeral we decided to take advantage of this rare opportunity to take
photographs of the family. You can see those photos on the
Bittersweet Reunion in Atlanta page.
Before you do, though, why don't you take the time to hug the kids or call your
brothers, sisters, or parents.

And to my family and friends, please know that I have always appreciated your
love, understanding, and unconditional acceptance; that I think of you often;
and that I send you my love.
