What's on Your Winter Playlist?
When
the snow begins to fall do you find yourself wailing "Oh, the weather outside is frightful" or are you more
likely to be singing "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas?"
Winter's like that, I guess. Some people hate it and some people love it,
but it's a rare person who is indifferent about the season best characterized by
short days and low temperatures.
I'm
trying to readjust to winters that are not 45 degrees and rainy and so far, I'll
have to admit, it's been kind of fun. As long as there's little or no
wind, 25 and sunny is much more pleasant than 45 and rainy. It's much more
likely to be sunny in the winter here than in the Northwest and sunshine
brightens the spirits as well as the sky.
The first measureable snow fell on
Thanksgiving Day. There was some sunshine in the morning to add some
sparkle but it clouded up later in the day. We got a wet and heavy snow on
December 1. Kathy and I took a long walk that morning and ran into our
neighbor. He was just returning from a canoe outing on Lake Mendota and
was walking down the street with his canoe over his head. He tries to
canoe at least once a month (as long as the lake is still liquid) and decided to
take his December trip early.
The snow started to fall again last night and we awoke this morning to another
6" of the white stuff. Unlike the previous snow, however, this was a
beautiful light and fluffy quilt of snow, the kind that you always see in
movies.
The weather has been making it a challenge for the birds to find food
and water. Kathy's been diligently keeping the feeders filled with seeds
while battling with squirrels that are amazingly capable of getting to the
feeders no matter where you hang them! On the first few days of cold
weather she even went out and added hot water to the bird bath to provide some
liquid for at least part of the day. The bath has well over a foot of snow on
it now so she's stopped trying to do that.
According to the weather man, we're currently ahead of normal snowfall and this
winter could continue to have more than the average amount of snowfall.
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!
[Very Important Note: If I had to get up at 5:30 AM to shovel out the
drive in order to get to work on time I would be much less enthused about all of
this white stuff. As an old retired guy, however, if it's snowing I can
just sit in the house with a warm cup of coffee and read a book. Boy
that's nice!]
