It's Been a Long Time Coming

I know that the word "hope" was used frequently in the presidential election.
Despite that, hope may be the best word to describe what I felt while watching
the Inauguration of President Obama. After eight years of a President who
will surely go down as one of the worst in the history of our country, we
finally have a new President. More importantly, we have a president
who has both intelligence and integrity, qualities that have been sorely lacking in
the White House. This gives me hope. I think that it also gives hope
to other Americans and to people in countries all around the world.
During the broadcast, many Black Americans, understandably moved, said they
thought they would never live to see this day. And yet it has finally
arrived. But it's not just Black Americans that are happy; the cheering
crowd was filled with Americans of all races, creeds, colors, religions, and
incomes. That's the beauty and the strength of our country. That's
what makes me proud to be an American.
I'm not naive enough to think that this means that our troubles will soon be
over. We have been going down the wrong path for far too long. The
more obvious it became that we were on the wrong path, the more determined
George W. Bush became to force us down that path to prove that he was right.
We have a lot of work to do, but I am hopeful that President Barack Obama and
his administration can provide the leadership and the inspiration to convince
Americans to make the changes that are needed to turn our ship of state around.
