I Read the News Today, Oh Boy
I was reading today’s paper. It was too early for an April Fool’s Day joke. I
wondered if I had picked up a copy of
The Onion by mistake? No, it was the
Wisconsin State Journal. And yet, there was the hilarious headline on page C1, “Lower taxes for rich urged. Good for economy, speaker says.”
This has to be a story about a comedian.
Was the speaker Jay Leno or David Letterman? No, he was Barry Asmus, a senior economist
with the National Center for Policy Analysis, a Dallas-based conservative think
tank. And what did he offer for proof of his assertions? He said after Ronald Reagan lowered taxes we had “the best 25 years in the history of the planet.” What planet is this guy from?
Obviously not the earth.
I looked up some data on the US economy. In the last fifty years the three presidents who put our country the deepest into debt were Ronald Reagan, George H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush, all practitioners of the tax strategy that Mr. Asmus praises.
FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, Johnson, Carter and Clinton all reduced the
country's debt. My heavens, 6 out of 7 of them are Democrats!!
Conservatives never let the truth interfere with their "thinking."
During “the best 25 years” there also was a huge shift in wealth from the middle class to the rich and US businesses were eagerly shipping jobs overseas. Is Mr. Asmus a great comedian or
simply a horrible student of history and economics?

Those were 25 really great years, weren't they?!!
I’m eagerly waiting for an article by the American Dental Association telling me how good candy and soda are for my teeth!
