Once in a Blue Moon

I'm sure that most people know that the term "Blue Moon" refers to the second full moon of the month.  This doesn't happen very often, about once every two-and-a-half years, hence the expression "Once in a blue moon."

The latest blue moon just happened to be on New Years Eve.  I'm hoping this is a good omen for 2010.  A lot of people are getting tired of the bad economy, the wars, and right-wing political nastiness.

Kathy and I walked down to the lake and stood shivering while waiting for the blue moon to rise.  It was a beautiful sight.  Lake Mendota is almost entirely frozen over; just a narrow strip of open water could be seen out in the middle.

Happy New Year!

[Note to photo buffs:  The above photo is a combination of two images, one exposed for the overall scene and one exposed for the moon.  Otherwise the full moon would be an overexposed white spot in this photo.  However, the moon is the correct size and in the correct location.  The only manipulating that I did was to put the good moon into the good overall image and adjust the exposures a bit.]
