It was time to return to the modern world, so we packed our bags and said "Auf Wiedersehen" to Rothenburg ob der Tauber.  This train trip went much better than the last.  All 4 trains were right on schedule and by 1:30 PM we had reached our destination, Munich.  We walked towards the center of town and, with the help of a kind couple who saw us looking at a map, we found the Hotel Münchner Kindl.

After unpacking we went for a walk around town.  Our hotel was on a side street only a few blocks from the pedestrian zone, which is the center of town both physically and tourist-wise.  When we arrived we could hear some great music.  Making our way through the crowd we spotted an exuberant quintet giving a great performance on the street.  They were the Tal Consort.  After listening to at least six or seven pieces our hunger got the best of us so we bought one of their CDs and went off to look for food.

It was the 4th of July so we decided we should have a real American lunch.  When we spotted a McDonalds we went inside.  It was crowded and most of the seating was upstairs.  The food tasted the same.  The main difference was that there was no ice in the soda (they handed you your soda; you didn't fill it yourself as in most places in the US).  In fact, it was impossible to find ice in Germany!  Since the weather was unseasonably warm during our trip, we really began to crave ice cold drinks.

After lunch we continued to wander around the pedestrian zone.  I couldn't believe how many public squares, churches, fountains, and magnificent buildings there were everywhere.  The New City Hall on the Marienplatz is outstanding.  Bells were ringing from churches all over the center of town -- the Frauenkirche, Michaelskirche, and Peterskirche to name a few.  One big tower that I thought must be  part of a church was actually a part of the Toy Museum.  Singers and musicians were out entertaining and trying to make a few euros.  The streets were filled with people having a good time.

After a lot of aimless but enjoyable walking we stopped for ice cream -- at least that's cold -- and then went back to the hotel.
