So here's the thing
I was really getting tired of working full time. When I started the job 18 years ago it was quite interesting.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality had just been authorized by the state legislature to create cleanup programs
for Hazardous Substances and also for Underground Storage Tanks. The program was new and we were all new to the program so it was exciting to invent the process and procedures that would be used in Oregon for cleaning up contaminated property. I enjoyed the work and was lucky to work with a great group of very dedicated professionals.
Times change, however, and the political winds also changed. Soon a more conservative state legislature was elected and their only goals appeared to be to cut taxes and cut government programs, especially those intended to help people or the environment. Budgets were cut, positions were cut, and staff morale began to fall. Had I been much younger I would probably have started to look for a new job. I was almost 58 years old, the age at which I could retire from a state job
in Oregon, so I decided to hang in there until then. On July 22, 2006, I celebrated my 58th birthday and,
after some wonderful retirement
parties, I officially retired on September 1, 2006.
In an attempt to stay out of trouble I decided to write my own blog. Hey, everyone else was doing it and since I am usually only 5 to 10 years behind
the times, the time was right.
All opinions in here are mine, though they were probably borrowed from someone else. I make no promises other than that I will try not to lie, at least
not too often. I may write once a day or maybe once a month. You'll just have to wait and see.
If you have any comments, please send them to me at anderson1948@att.net.
Thanks.
