North of the Tension Line (Page 2/4)

[July 16, 2007]  Now that all of the surprise party stuff is over we can finally start to do some serious relaxing.  Jan, Joe, and Elsie came up yesterday for the party as did Andy and Dorothy.  They all stayed with us in our luxurious rented vacation home on the north end of the island.  That worked out well and we enjoyed having guests.

Since this was the first time that Andy and Dorothy had been to the island, Kathy and I drove them around and gave them an official tour.  If you've never been there and you would like to get an idea of the myriad of things that can be found on Washington Island, take a look at this Washington Island Map.

Although island activity isn't highly structured, there are two big things that you can expect to go on during the week, fishing and eating.  Not everyone fishes, but everyone eats.  We had dinner tonight at the Zierten and Clope Manor on Hemlock Drive.  (The name of the road in no way represents the quality of the food.)  The conversation that evening was about Dan Sorensen's lucky catch of the day.  It's only Monday and he already has the bass to beat.

[July 17, 2007]  The past couple of mornings we've seen a fox stroll past the front of the house.  That, along with the abundant deer, have been adding a little touch of nature to the week.  All of the talk, however, has been about the fish.  Fishing fever, a close relative of Island Fever, struck again today.  Jan and Joe went out in Mellow Yellow with Dennie and hopes were high for breaking the 5-pound barrier on smallmouth bass.  They had pretty good luck and Joe came back with a good one.  Unfortunately for Joe, it didn't beat Dan's catch.  It should be a good fish fry this year.

Dinner tonight was at Steve and Wendy's cottage; Wendy's friend Reve was also there.  It was steak fry night, but we all started out eating deep fried chicken wings and drum sticks prepared by one of Atlanta's premier chefs, Uncle Jim Bob Sustachek.  After the various grills were finally lit everyone tended to their own steak and also shared some pot luck dishes.  What a great meal!

We finished eating in time to walk down to the shore to catch the sunset.  Despite the comments of some naysayers, it turned out to be a pretty good sunset.

Just another day in Paradise!
