North of the Tension Line (Page 3/4)
[July
18, 2007] It was a relaxing day today. Jan, Joe, Elsie, Kathy
and I had a nice breakfast at the Sunset Resort on West Harbor. When we
returned to the house some of the Sorensen/Shoff
clan came over to visit this morning. We bravely scaled the limestone cliffs behind
the house and explored the rocky shore.
Later in the day Jan and Joe took
us for a ride to see a neat vacation home that they would like to rent some day
-- it looks like a railroad depot and there's a caboose sitting on tracks along
side! En-joe-neer Orth was very excited about the place since he loves
trains and the location, right on the shores of beautiful Figenschau Bay,
couldn't be better. They plan to call and get information about the place
for potential future use.
We
drove over to McDonald's cottages to visit the happy anniversary couple, still
obviously enjoying the afterglow of the celebration. In the past we used
to rent quite a few adjacent cottages at Flath's or McDonalds and we all just
walked back and forth to visit or share a meal. It seems a bit strange
this year to have Min, Pudge, Jim and Jasmine by themselves in one cottage and
the rest of us scattered around in different rental houses. It would be
nice if we could find places that are closer together next year.
It
was Mexican night tonight. Since the Sorensen house is too small to host
the entire group, we all convened at the Zierten place again. Dan was
cooking up some fajitas when we arrived and along with the other bean-y and
taco-y stuff it was a great meal.
[July
19, 2007] Shortly after getting up this morning we were greeted with a
very loud buzzing noise. It was the "Tank Alert Alarm System" located in
the laundry room. I finally found the silence button but, the question
remained, "What the heck does that mean and should we do something about it?"
I finally drove down to the Island Realty and explained what happened. The
guy there said it meant that the holding tank was ready to be pumped and he
would get someone out to take care of it. Then he said he should probably
tell renters about that in case it goes off at 3 in the morning. Well,
duh!
We had not gotten together with everyone for a meal since
last evening so Kathy invited everyone over to our house for a brunch. She
was concerned that a lot of people would be out fishing and not be able to make
it. However, she soon discovered that saying the magic word "food" ensured
perfect attendance.
It was pretty windy today. The lake was kicking up again. We didn't
do much in the afternoon but, after much discussion, we did make a big decision.
Since Jan, Joe, and Elsie have to return to Racine tomorrow, we decided to move
the traditional Friday night fish fry to tonight! Imagine that, a Thursday
night fish fry (it's probably already Friday across the date line anyway).
The big feed was held at the Sustachek/Salituro Resort and there was plenty of
great food again (you might be gaining weight just reading this).
The
best part of the evening was the unveiling of the "Al Leuker Memorial Bass
Trophy." This was, of course, named in honor of
Al Leuker, who loved
fishing up here on the island and had come up here since the '30's. We had
hoped he would be here in person, but at least he was here in spirit.
There's still one more day of fishing left, but Dan Sorensen is still in the
lead for the traveling trophy.
We ended the evening with two traditional activities: a group photo and a
sing-along. The photo was the usual chaos as practically everyone who had
a camera tried to run out and get their own photo of the group minus them.
Wendy was smart enough to bring along a tripod so she should have a copy that
has everyone in it.

We often have the sing-along around the camp fire but it was still a bit windy
so we got together inside one of the spacious rooms in JoJo's cottage and held
it indoors this year. Fortunately Steve and Dan were there to play many of
the old songs. I played a few but just couldn't remember some of the
requests like Mrs. Robinson and I Love My Shirt. Twenty-five years of not
playing these tunes has left me a bit rusty. I did, however, pen a new
tune just a couple of days ago. It starts out like this:
Woke up this mornin' feelin' fine.
Must be because I'm north of the line.
Yes, I'm north of the line and that's good news,
'Cause I don't want those south of the tension line blues.
I think that a good time was had by all.
