North of the Tension Line (Page 4/4)
 [July
20, 2007] (Friday -- I have to stop thinking about the fact that this
is the last day here!) Jan, Joe, and Elsie went back to Racine today
because Joe has to work tomorrow. Kathy and I drove around a bit and then
stopped at the Sorensen/Shoff cottage along the shores of Washington Harbor.
They have a great view of School House Beach, but Chris pointed out that they
have quite a few snakes that like to sunbathe on the rocks in front of their
place. That's not the type of sunbathers that I was hoping to see!
 Since
Kathy wanted to bake some things to bring to the group meal tonight I drove
around for a while in the afternoon looking at some of the old sights like the
Jacobsen Museum and Little Lake. When Kathy was done baking we drove to
Little Mountain and climbed up the many, many steps to the top of the "mountain"
and then to the top of the lookout tower. The view of the tree-covered
landscape framed by the lake and other islands to the north was beautiful.
Tonight
was Italian night. There was some confusion about where to have the meal
but we finally ended up at the Zierten place again since they have so much room
there. Lasagna, stuffed noodles, Italian sausages ... this list of filling
food was endless and excellent. What can I say but mangia, mangia!
After dinner I was surprised to find out that what Kathy was baking earlier today
was a birthday cheese cake for me! My birthday is in two days -- 59, sigh
-- and the gang all sang happy birthday. That was wonderful. I
couldn't think of a better place to celebrate the occasion.
We ended the evening with total abandon by stopping at Nelson's Tavern and
having our shots of
bitters.
As I've often said before, "That's sure not the drink that I would normally
seek, and when I belch I know that I will taste if for a week!" Some
traditions never die.
 [July
21, 2007] Time for those south-of-the-tension-line blues to set in.
After packing up and checking out of the house Kathy and I decided to drive over
to the airport to see the fly-in fish boil. We've never been there before
so it was worth a visit. Hundreds of small planes flew in from all around
the country to share in this annual island event. Since this is the week
before the big experimental aircraft show in Oshkosh I suspect that some people
arrive a few days early for the fish boil. The weather was excellent and
locals, bikers, pilots, and everyone else enjoyed camaraderie fueled by good
food and good beer.

After
the fish boil we stopped at the Albatross for a burger and caught the next ferry
back to the mainland. We sure hope to be back next year.
